Meet Suzie

Hi, my name is Suzie Middleton (also known as Sue ) and I have developed my company Caliera Performance Horses (CPH) from a breeding and horse ownership enterprise to also encompass bodywork treatment with the ultimate aim of injury prevention and management of pre-existing biomechanical concerns.
I’m not your usual horse enthusiast, in that my passion for horses developed later in life. Although I’ve always loved horses and animals in general, it wasn’t until I approached the age of 40 that I became a horse owner and became passionate about understanding equine anatomy and their athleticism.
Having been a qualified registered nurse for many years I wanted to understand the science behind such an amazing athletic animal, which led me to complete an Equine Science Degree at Charles Sturt University. Whilst undertaking my degree I became even more passionate about the biomechanics of horses and the assessment and identification of possible conformational weaknesses that we can manage through bodywork and conditioning, with the ultimate goal of injury prevention and longevity of performance.

I started riding at the same time in my life and after the first few years of riding, I had a lesson with Jamie Winning from Yandoo Equestrian who changed my life (and my husband’s as well). Along with being my riding coach, we began breeding horses together with her husband Jamie Kermond. While I had a passion I had very little experience in the care, management and production of horses. Jamie saw my passion and encouraged us to become partners in breeding a number of great horses which we continue to undertake to this day. I feel very fortunate to have had Jamie and the Yandoo team supporting and encouraging me along the way. While my degree has given me the knowledge it is my involvement with Yandoo that has given me the practical experience, along with my part-time work with Anneliese Downing Equine Vet, another invaluable connection in my personal and equine knowledge development.

My ultimate goal with Caliera Performance Horses is to be intimately involved in the proactive management of sport horses in consultation with owners, farriers and veterinarians to promote soundness, peak performance and longevity. It is my long-term ambition that through this approach we can ultimately promote the development of successful well-managed sport horse production in Australia.
